New Year's Wedding

Concert Themed Wedding With A View Of NY

My brother and (then future) sister-in-law were getting married in an urban event space in Jersey City - just across the river from New York City. They hit me up to the graphic design. Naturally, I agreed.

The Challenge

Position The Wedding As A Concert

Both JD & Lauren are avid fans of live music. Going to shows is a large part of their life together. Appropriately, they decided to lightly theme their wedding as a live music event. While the theme stopped short at being married by an ordained Judas Priest (boom), the concert approach was taken with the invites and seating arrangements. However, programs and other printed material still needed to fit in with the look and feel.

The Invite Poster

Making An Impression By Mail

The main piece for the wedding package was the invite. JD & Lauren came up with the idea of using a concert poster format to announce their event. I used engagement photos as a guide for the vector rendition of their heads and focused on iconic pieces of New York City life for the graphic embellishments - in particular the New Year's Eve Times Square ball.

The invites were printed on poster-weight tabloid stock and rolled into shipping tubes with RSVP cards and mailed out to all guests.

Extra invites were available at the wedding event for anyone who's copy was creased in shipment.

I carried over the same look and feel to the other pieces of the package. Including the event program and the method for seating assignments. Each guest was given a "concert ticket" with their name and seating assignment listed. It was an added touch to follow through on the concert theme and complete the thought from the invite.

This was an interesting project to work on. It wasn't your traditional wedding invite design package - and clearly JD & Lauren did not want a traditional wedding invite package. But it was also important to stay true to the venue and the type of event. Ultimately, the nods to the New York-focused location and the New Year's Eve lens, combined with the uniquely appropriate concert feel made it exactly what JD & Lauren were looking for.

Several guests took home extra copies of the invite and a couple even have them framed in their house.

🤘 Thanks for stopping by.
